Guest post from Darlene:
The story takes place in the summer of 1964 and eleven-year-old Jack really misses his Dad who is MIA in Vietnam.
Jack, his Mom, and little sister Katy are spending the whole summer with Dad’s parents. Away from friends, away from reminders of Dad, and Jack is miserable, especially when Gran serves vegetables. Which is always!
Jack makes a new friend named Jill whose brother is a bully and won’t leave Jack and Jill alone. They catch a one-eyed fish named Fred who turns out to be a fish that grants wishes. Can you imagine what they might wish for?
I wish kids who read the book will make kind “giving wishes” for others and try to make them come true.
I wish the book will encourage classroom discussions about kindness and bullying and how to find the courage to do the right thing, not the easy thing, even though sometimes doing the right thing is hard.
I wish for the book to be enjoyed by kids and shared with friends and family.
