I think writers definitely need to read! I agree with Stephen King on this: "You have to read widely, constantly refining (and redefining) your own work as you do so. If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write.”

For readers: I just finished Grit by Angela Duckworth. She mentions an interesting concept inspired by advice from Warren Buffet. Identify your top 25 goals. Narrow those to the most important 5. Then -- here's the unique part -- avoid the other 20, because they are taking time away from your top 5. "They’re what distract you; they eat away time and energy taking your eye from the goals that matter more.” The idea of avoiding non-important goals seems fascinating. The only exception, she says, is if they are actually sub-goals for the big 5.
