Varian Johnson, author and contest judge, has created three first lines to get US and Canadian students started on their short story of 800-3000 words. Note that entries must be submitted by teachers, parents, or guardians--not the student directly. On the contest website, Johnson offers advice in his "How to Write a Great Short Story" video, including, "The most interesting characters are characters who want something."
Deadline: March 1, 2021 Prizes include $100 and publication for the student, along with class copies of Johnson’s novel The Parker Inheritance. For further information, check out the contest website. (Other Scope writing contests are listed here.) |
