Have you ever manufactured a deadline to complete a creative goal?
My theme for the April A to Z blogging challenge is productivity for creative people. If you are not under an official deadline, one way to encourage progress is to manufacture your own due date. You can make a promise to yourself (“I will finish this draft before the kids are off for summer vacation!”), and if that doesn’t work, make a promise to someone else. Let your niece know that you’ll finish knitting the blanket in time for her birthday. Tell your critique partners that you’ll have chapters ready for them. Set up a blog schedule and notify your followers that you’ll be posting on certain days. If you have an agent, give her a date when you’ll have the manuscript done. I find that once I’m accountable to other people, I’m much more likely to honor that commitment. According to The Power of Deadlines, “the general pattern is that, as people approach a deadline, they typically become more motivated and work harder at the task in hand, and performance can even improve.” Do you find deadlines motivating or stressful?

As much as I don't like pressure, I find that without it, I'm not near as productive. So yes, making yourself accountable by either posting your goals or telling others is really the way to go. 4/22/2016 07:59:18 pm
Shh, I don't say deadline around my muse. I say goals because she likes those better. LOL 4/26/2016 11:42:02 am
I'm another big fan of deadlines. I am much more productive when I know I have to finish something by a particular date, rather than just saying I hope to finish by then, without any consequences if I don't. 5/16/2016 08:08:38 am
I admit that I was a procrastinator and I used to stay up late just to finish the work that I needed to do before the day of the deadline. When I became a college student, I said to myself that procrastination is not good for me, especially when I wanted to graduate with honors. When I was doing my thesis, I set a deadline for every chapter that I need to finish. Surprisingly, I finished my thesis in a month’s time while my other classmates were having a hard time to finish it on time. My secret at that time was I set a deadline for every thing that I did even house chores. It was my way of improving my productivity in the things that I do. I proved that it is important that you finish ahead of time so you won’t be stressed that you have more things to accomplish. Thank you again for this awesome tip! Comments are closed.
