Happy Reading!
It's Banned Books Week. In case you're wondering about terminology, according to the American Library Association, "A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others." Their preliminary data for this year indicates a "record surge of challenges in public libraries." Celebrate your freedom this week by reading a frequently challenged book. IWSG Monthly Blog Hop Every month, the Insecure Writers Support Group hosts a blog hop with an optional question meant to inspire and encourage other writers. Special thanks to founder Alex Cavanaugh and to this month’s co-hosts, Natalie Aguirre, Kim Lajevardi, Debs Carey, Gwen Gardner, Patricia Josephine, and Rebecca Douglass! This month's question is about the use of AI. One recent hot topic of discussion is how existing books were used to train AI, so rather than offer opinions, I'll share this free Author's Guild resource: You Just Found Out Your Book Was Used to Train AI. Now What? “Any book worth banning is a book worth reading.” ―Isaac Asimov

Thanks for sharing that article. I wasn't surprised to find my work has not been used, but it's good to know what to do if it has. And I support making the pirates pay. That in itself might be a way to slow down the rush to create AI that can (supposedly) displace human writers. 10/4/2023 04:51:50 pm
Thank you for this link! I could not find it when I was typing up my blog and it's a very helpful one! 10/4/2023 07:06:42 pm
I saw that link and another going around that allowed writers to see if their work was used without permission. Luckily mine wasn't, but lots of others were and that's just wrong. If you want to make money off your AI then you better damn well compensate the people whose stuff you used to train it. 10/5/2023 01:53:39 pm
A very informative post, Yvonne. Thank you so much. I love the read banned books poster: Let freedom read. Yes! All best to you! 10/16/2023 09:10:38 pm
There definitely needs to be regulations around gated content. I discuss my thoughts on the importance of regulation reform to protect artists while still allowing AI to develop and grow into a useful tool for others. Comments are closed.
